| I've been following a gluten free diet for a few weeks now and have felt much better. Last night and this morning however I haven't felt too good. Same symptoms as before. The only different thing that I had eaten was a piece of steak. I'm not a big red meat eater and this is the first time I've eaten any since going gluten free. Can red meat cause problems in someone with coeliac / gluten intolerance? |

| Did you marinate it in anything? Maybe the marinade had something in it? Or what did you eat with the steak? It could also be that you don't eat much red meat so you're just not used to it? I'm vegetarian and I've heard that sometimes if you eat meat after not eating it for awhile you can have a bad reaction at first because your body isn't used to it. I'm not sure how true it is, but maybe that is a possibility? |

| No I didn't marinate it in anything. It was just grilled, not even any oil as I know I don't tolerate oil or anything fried. I had it with boiled potatoes which I can eat with no problems. The steak was the only thing I ate which I haven't had since stopping the gluten. I'm fine with poultry, bacon, gammon and fish. Before stopping the gluten I had a really bad reaction when I ate mince. I put it down to the gravy but now I'm wondering if it was a combination of the red meat and gravy. |

Hi Hamster
If you have problems with oils and anything fried, could it be that fats generally cause difficulties? And that the steak was a bit too fatty for you?
All the best

Thanks for the help. I didn't have it with gravy as I learnt the hard way about gluten in gravy! It is possible that it my have been the cut of meat was too fatty. I can't say I'd miss it if I stop eating it.
Thankfully I don't have an iron deficiency. I had a complete blood count done recently. This could be because my GP has me on two multivitimins a day. |

I can react to beef... however I can eat beef it is sourced from a good place.
We think I react to the traces of what the animal was fed - however, organic beef I can eat as much of as I want. Cheap beef and I go red in teh face, round my mouth to start, then itchy and if I continue to eat will get sick...
Great for telling the quality in a restaurant... cheap or quality meat? look at Katy's face...
Suppose I should be mascot for proper meat campaign...
Have you tried organic meats and noticed any difference? |

| Also a glass of good red wine is a must for digesting red meat - although its hard to find one that does not contain milk (which makes me sick too). |

Unfortunately I can't drink alcohol. This is not to do with eating gluten free but because I am on high dose painkillers for another problem.
I haven't tried organic meat. After yet another trip to my GP last week it was advised I cut it out completely. It was a totally surreal visit as we ended up discusing a cows diet! |

Is it possible that bread was toasted under the grill and hadn't been washed prior to you using it? cross contamination.

| Toast is made under the grill but it is always washed before I use it. I'm fine with bacon cooked there so I'm positive it was the red meat. |

What other than iron is typically included in a complete blood count? |

I sometimes have a reaction to beef if it is not cooked properly. I love my beef "medium" but sometimes I can feel my mouth swell up, my voice changes tone and the inside of my mouth gets really itchy. iI feel that I am allergic to the 'protein' in the beef.
I feel also the better cut meats then I do not seem to have the problem as much. |
