What are digestive enzymes?

Enzymes are the chemical sparks of life. Without them, many body processes could not function. A healthy digestion and assimilation of food is dependent upon the body's secretions of sufficient enzymes. Protease, amylase, lipase, cellulase and lactase all break down food into small components so the body can extract various nutrients from the food and use them to build tissue and maintain health.

Who should have them?

Any one can, either to supplement the digestive system to break down more food or if the digestive system for one reason or another does not produce any or enough of the digestive enzymes needed. Common symptoms of food reactions due to intolerance are bloating, flatulence, gas, wind, diarrhoea and cramps. They can all be eliminated by digestive enzymes. Moreover digestive enzymes are able to break down proteins that cause food reactions due to allergies, hence also suitable for allergy sufferers.

Why do people need them?

The key to good health is a varied and balanced diet. Current advice from the Foods Standards Agency (FSA) suggests that you should eat at least 5 portions of fresh fruit and vegetables daily along with 3 portions of oily fish per week and plenty of wholegrain and lean, white meat. This is all very well but research suggests that many of us do not achieve this. We are more pushed for time and exposed to more pollution which puts our bodies under a greater nutritional demand. Taking a nutritional supplement helps to ensure that you get all the nutrients that you need and provides peace of mind.

What are they made of?

Made from the purest raw materials and combined with organic ingredients wherever possible. They are plant based enzymes sourced from aspergillus and grown in a laboratory setting on plants such as barley and soy. Of all the enzymes plant based enzymes are the most active and potent which unlike animal based enzymes withstand the low pH (acidity) of the stomach and hence survive their journey to the small intestine where mostly needed.
